General practice is not unattractive to younger doctors — here’s the real problem

The attractiveness of general practice is certainly a hot topic. Recently, medical students indicated to me that they were interested in general practice and having their own business — being their own boss.
There are challenges in general practice that we continually contend contribute to exhaustion. These include pressure from the Professional Services Review (PSR), nudge letters about prescribing, the threat of getting Medicare ‘wrong’, and being victims of vexatious claims to AHPRA.
Then there’s ongoing misunderstanding between GPs and our non-GP specialist colleagues and other healthcare providers, as well as the blurring of the traditional division of labour between doctors and nurses.
But I think that the idea of ‘loss of attractiveness’ is probably slightly misconstrued.
