‘I carry sheets in my car to cover the dead’: The danger that lurks on rural roads

Anonymous GP

I rounded the sweeping 80km/h corner on a tail of slowing cars and brakelights.

The garbage truck was splayed across the road on its side. People were jumping out of their cars and running to help.

I’m not proud of my initial reaction. Surely with so many helpers, so much confusion, wouldn’t I be able to sneak past?

I surveyed the scene again. It was a horror of twisted metal and broken glass. There was no way out of it.
