Indemnity for transgender care — are MDOs wrongly dictating what is appropriate medical practice?
Medical indemnity recently made a rare appearance in the national headlines.
It was triggered by the decision by MDA National to not provide indemnity cover for private doctors who receive claims “arising from aspects of gender-transitioning treatment for patients aged under 18 years old”.
It applied to those in private practice initiating hormone therapies and who work outside a hospital-based multidisciplinary team.
Cover would also be denied if a claim eventuated after a private doctor made an assessment that a child or adolescent was “suitable for gender transition”.
