Is scrapping high-stakes clinical exams for registrars undermining standards? The AMC responds

In response to Dr Andrew Amos’ opinion piece, ‘Scrapping high pressure clinical exams for trainees makes it dangerously easy to become a specialist’, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) would like to outline the advice it has provided to specialist medical colleges concerning assessment.
The remit of the AMC is to develop and apply accreditation standards for medical education programs and providers in Australia and, where applicable, New Zealand.
These standards are available on the AMC website.
For specialist medical education providers, the relevant standard regarding assessment is Standard 5. Training programs are assessed against standards relating to:
