Is your patient ‘leaving’ the room? How to spot those subtle signs

Humans are fascinating creatures, with wonderful imaginations.
We can be sitting in an aeroplane seat, eating lunch, looking out the window at the clouds while contemplating our past or envisaging our futures, daydreaming into existence our wildest fantasies, or planning the evasion of our greatest fears.
Sometimes we get in the car, drive a familiar route, get lost in thought, the audiobook or music, and suddenly we’re at our destination, having got there seemingly on auto-pilot.
Other times, we can be so absorbed in a task that we block out our surroundings, unaware of the events around us, our thoughts streaming so clear that, if interrupted, the interrupter has to repeat themselves in order to be heard, let alone understood.
