The patient was a fit-looking lady in her early 80s, booked in to see me for her routine driver’s licence medical examination.

She and her husband had been patients at the practice for many years, but I had never met her before that day.

I reviewed her file and my senior colleague’s somewhat sparse entries, noting that she was not taking any regular medications and had no current medical problems. I checked her blood pressure and visual acuity — both normal.

We chatted about her general health, which seemed excellent.
