Modern slavery exists in Australia – doctors can help uncover it

Professor Jennifer Burn

Australians are often surprised to learn that modern slavery happens here.

Modern slavery is a broad term that includes slavery, servitude, forced labour, forced marriage, human trafficking, exploitative recruitment and debt bondage.

And it can be hidden in plain sight: on farms, construction sites, restaurants and in people’s homes.

Healthcare remains one of the few opportunities a person in slavery will have to be identified and removed from serious exploitation. And below I’m going to talk about a GP supporting a woman in a state of terror about what was happening to her.
