Better than the textbooks: What I learnt from Eric, my patient with schizophrenia

All my life I have been puzzled by schizophrenia.
My first patient with the condition was Eric. I was a medical student and he was allocated to me.
Eric’s father had rung one of the psychiatrists at our hospital saying he needed his son admitted to the psychiatric unit.
The psychiatrist explained that that was not the way things were done and that he should speak to his GP for a referral.
