‘No jab, no heart’: When polarised views miss the point

You may have heard about the dispute between a Victorian woman with end-stage heart failure and her treating team at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.
The dispute relates to the routine requirement for COVID-19 vaccination prior to consideration for heart transplantation, and the woman’s refusal to receive that vaccine and one for influenza.
After failure to reach an agreement, the case has reached the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
The patient’s representative (an unlicensed lawyer known for her anti-vaccine views) argued that this requirement constitutes discrimination.
