Tenderness as weakness? Our biomedical armour is making us lonely and isolated

A few weeks ago I was lucky to spend a day in my practice with gynaecologist Dr Paddy Moore, who came to support me with IUD insertions in general practice — a fabulous initiative.

Paddy is a highly respected gynaecologist in her field, renowned for her clinical work and leadership, and the head of department at a large metropolitan hospital.

I’ll admit that, before she arrived, I felt that familiar flicker of trepidation that many GPs feel when a very experienced specialist comes into our world.

It’s the unspoken worry that they might see all the cracks in what we do, the shortcuts we take to survive busy days, the imperfect realities of general practice.
