The RACGP on practice accreditation: Why the system matters more than ever

Dr Paul Mara’s recent reflections on general practice accreditation highlight the need for ongoing discussion about how we measure and maintain quality in our profession.

Different perspectives are always encouraged, and given consultation will begin next month on the RACGP’s updated sixth edition of the Standards for general practices, perhaps the timing of Dr Mara’s self-proclaimed ‘mea culpa’ is convenient for some.

In any discussion of this kind, it is important to recognise, rather than conveniently forget or dismiss, the value of the accreditation system we have, the principles it upholds, and the continuous improvements already underway.

Across the world, accreditation is recognised as a key marker of safe, high-quality healthcare.
