Is the proposed urgent care model pie in the sky?

Flying piggy bank

Labor’s capture of the Central Coast seat in the election this year has brought a new perspective on how to manage overcrowded EDs.

It has pledged to build two urgent care centres to alleviate ED pressures in my area and another 48 nationwide over the next four years, with $135 million to back the rollout.1

Now more recently, the states are giving it a go, with NSW and Victoria expecting to recruit GPs to provide this care to patients, presumably at universally bulk-billed prices.

As one doctor has already quipped, it’s like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic.
