For most of the pandemic Australia has been the benchmark for keeping COVID-19 at bay, with timely testing, high vaccination rates and tight border controls.

However, we now find ourselves unravelling, with figures showing there were more than 62,000 coronavirus cases in Australia in the past day, with more than 25,000 in NSW alone – the infection is now rife in our communities. ¹
