Seven years ago, I attended my first national obesity conference. I was a baby GP researcher presenting two posters on how general practice might approach the management of patients. 

For anyone who hasn’t presented a poster at a conference, it can be a very unfriendly experience — either lonely, with no one coming to talk to you, or terrifying, as academics try to trip you up with intensive questioning.
