Remembrance of things past: How memory distortions affect legal cases against GPs

In a recent medical negligence case, the judge concluded that the patient’s mother (the plaintiff) had developed a “significant prejudice” against the defendant GP and that this coloured her memory of the events.
He found in favour of the GP, dismissing the claim.
The mother had accused the Sydney GP of a delay in diagnosing her daughter’s leukaemia.
The court found that the stress and trauma associated with her daughter’s diagnosis contributed to her making “fanciful” allegations against the GP.
