Rub-a-dub-dub, 30,000 men studied in a tub

A good soak in a hot tub is a ritual enjoyed by many. But could it do more for the body than relaxing muscles and cleansing?
In 2015, a Finnish study showed that frequent sauna bathing, which is ingrained in Scandinavian culture, was associated with a reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease and CVD generally.
Researchers have wondered whether a similar beneficial effect could be associated with the Japanese habit of tub bathing, where individuals are immersed in steaming hot water to shoulder height.
Now, after a first-of-its-kind observational study, an Osaka University-led team say they have shown this tradition may lead to long-term cardiovascular benefits — and in a dose-response manner.
