Sam was my patient for nine years — her death raised a dilemma all GPs must face

I have often contemplated how best to grieve for a patient.

What sort of feelings should we allow ourselves to have for someone who is neither family nor friend, but with whom we’ve had a very intense relationship?

Recently this came up for me again.

I returned from leave to find a message in my inbox that Sam, my 43-year-old schizophrenic patient, had died.
