The boy who crossed a war zone on his knees and crawled into my clinic

Omar (on crutches) with his friends.

Omar* was a child who had experienced civil war, malnutrition and disease. He had left and crossed through some of the most dangerous places on earth.

This was 1993, at the beginning of the Somali civil war.

Omar was from Somalia and had escaped conflict, civil war violence and horror.

The Somali people suffered malnutrition and disease, and 200,000 ended up in the border camps in the desert. It was a mass starvation of children.
