The critical gap in workforce planning: What happens when male GPs become dads?

As we come to the end of Movember, I reflect on the unique challenge of being a dad GP.

Men aren’t traditionally good at talking about this stuff, so here goes my attempt. Being a GP is deeply rewarding, but being a dad GP is both a great joy and my greatest professional challenge.

This is a journey I’ve undertaken with my amazing wife, who is also a working mum and doctor, and both of our workplaces have been incredibly supportive in facilitating the flexibility required to manage our clinical careers and our family.

Even with that, I’ve often felt like I’ve learned to balance this dual career in the deep end — and not the fun, splashy end of swimming lessons (baby shark, anyone?).
