The latest trial of pharmacist UTI prescribing looks legitimate – until you read the diagnostic standards

The pharmacy trial for the management of UTIs by community pharmacists in NSW is fundamentally flawed in ways that will render its results on safety and efficacy uninterpretable.
As such it should cease until the necessary remedial actions have been instituted.
The clinical management protocol of the trial has now been published. Those who had hoped for a proper study to answer important clinical questions will be disappointed by another example of wasted clinical research.1,2
Before getting into the important detail, it is pertinent to revisit the issues to date.
