IMGs were once considered ‘alien invaders’: I owe my career to one of them

Dr Rachootin’s mentor Dr Lou Levy (right) and his brothers Alex (left) and Len (centre) fought in the Pacific during WWII.

I’ve been pondering the hurdles that IMG doctors have faced in trying to practise in Australia.

There has been a host of bureaucratic hoops to jump through and delays, then supervised practice, provisional registration, limited registration to areas of need, the 10-year moratorium, and placements to isolated areas where they cannot gain needed skills or follow their desired career path.

Now, in complete desperation, some of the barriers to recognition of professional qualifications from overseas are being lifted to help address the shortage of doctors in Australia.

It is interesting to consider this issue from a historical perspective.
