The weapons industry causes immense human suffering, so why is Melbourne University in bed with its biggest player?

The University of Melbourne, like many universities around Australia, is deeply entwined with the weapons industry.
This industry that has a profoundly negative effect on global public health as well as facilitating egregious violations of human rights.
Since 2016, my organisation, the Medical Association for Prevention of War, has been lobbying the university to cut its ties with the industry, and in particular with Lockheed Martin — the worlds’ biggest weapons company.
To put this company into context, some 90% of its $59 billion revenue came from weapons sales in 2022.
