The Voldemort advice for T2DM that GPs should not ignore

Dr James Muecke

In Australia, ‘low carb’ is the diabetes world’s equivalent of ‘Voldemort’ — the suggestion that diabetes remission can be achieved with low-carb dietary approaches is rarely spoken aloud.

The silence resounds in our national institutions, the medical media and in the consulting rooms of those who manage diabetes.

If diabetes reversal is mentioned, it’s usually in the context of commercial meal replacements or bariatric surgery.1

More column space is devoted to potential problems with low-carbohydrate nutrition than to actual evidence about the benefits.2,3
