When the ‘C’ in hep C stands for comorbidities

Effective and well-tolerated direct-acting antivirals have revolutionised the treatment of chronic hepatitis C and attracted more GPs to become prescribers.
But it’s identifying and managing the many comorbidities experienced by patients with the disease that is at the heart of holistic general practice care.
“Considering comorbidities is really important,” says Professor Mieke van Driel, chair of general practice at the University of Queensland.
“That is what general practice is about — looking at the whole person and not only one specific disease. It’s about how you manage the person and all things around it.”
