‘I want to die of something more interesting’: Why my patients warm my heart

A new patient presented and summarised her medical history for me. It was only when I got a copy of her medical records, that I discovered her medications included lithium, which she hadn’t mentioned.
When I later asked her about the oversight, she explained that she neglected to mention it because lithium “is just a salt”.
Obviously, she was correct.
Another patient, with a vocal cord disorder, was doing exercises under the guidance of a speech pathologist. She advised me that part of her regimen required that she “meow” at regular intervals throughout the day.
