Who needs celebrities? Doctors are my heroes

I once attended a medical conference where the keynote speaker was a well-known performer and author of a successful biography.
He spoke at length of his astounding journey from grinding poverty in a large family to become an internationally acclaimed phenomenon.
Each small success in that journey was attributed to his determination and self-belief, attributes which, he assured the audience, could conquer any adversity. He delivered his presentation in front of a huge picture of himself that occupied the entire backdrop.
Predictably, the speaker was feted after his performance and sold many copies of his book.
