Why I started calling my patients the C-word

I now call my patients customers, and I’ve mostly stopped feeling weird about it, but it took a while.

‘Patient’ is the first word the profession hands you, and one of the last it lets you question.

It carries all the things we like to believe about ourselves: the care, the duty, the commitment to the person who has arrived at your door frightened and handed themselves over.

‘Customer’ sounds like it belongs next to a loyalty card.
