Why I want every GP to vote yes to the Voice

As a former flying doctor and remote area locum, I was fortunate to experience Indigenous-controlled initiatives that are really helping to close the gap.

Starting in the Torres Strait, I was there for Mabo Day, when tribes from all the islands came to compete in sports and celebrate their culture. Their fish-based diet meant they had excellent cholesterol and low heart disease.

Service delivery was team-based and addressed their priorities, such as sex education, contraception and STI prevention. A separate team delivered diabetes management and education.

Teams employed locally trained service providers, creating employment and delivering improved outcomes.
