Why I’m calling for fish oil to be put on the PBS

There's a simple solution for preventing preterm births - allowing GPs to prescribe omega 3s, says leading obstetrician Professor Julie Quinlivan

We see them in little cots, connected to ventilators, tubes in place to administer drugs as they struggle to grow. Parents watch their baby from behind glass walls feeling helpless.

They know some babies will die. Others will survive, but at the cost of a lifelong disability.

Preterm birth, especially early preterm birth at less than 34 weeks gestation, is the leading global cause of death and disability in children. It is the direct cause of more than 85% of perinatal deaths.1

However, there is a simple and easy intervention in the form of omega 3 supplements, with an updated Cochrane Review of 70 randomised trials, involving almost 20,000 pregnant women, showing they can reduce early preterm birth by 42% and an 11% reduction in preterm birth overall.2
