Costly lesson for practice that leaked patient’s abuse history

A NEW ZEALAND general practice that inadvertently revealed a patient’s abuse history will pay compensation to the patient and has changed its postal systems.

The patient revealed childhood abuse to a GP at the practice and was referred for counselling, an investigation by the country's privacy commissioner found. The GP followed up with a letter referring to the abuse suffered by the patient. Unfortunately, the letter sent by the practice did not include the patient’s name on the envelope or a return address.
