Quiz - Are you liable for this misdiagnosis?
A boarding school calls you at 11pm to see a 12-year-old boy with abdominal pain.
You can’t find any abnormal signs, but some of the other boys in the dormitory have diarrhoea and vomiting and you diagnose gastroenteritis.
Later that night you receive another call to say the boy has vomited and you prescribe rest and oral fluids over the phone.
Several months later, you are sued by the boy and his parents for failing to diagnose and properly treat torsion of his right testis, which necessitated an orchidectomy.
Are you liable?
