Adenomas: Sometimes ‘safe to skip’ adrenal venous sampling

In patients with primary aldosteronism and clearly visualised unilateral adenomas, confirmatory adrenal venous sampling (AVS) may not be required prior to surgery, researchers say.
US researchers studied 45 people with hyperaldosteronism with cross-sectional imaging and AVS data.
They compared these with 80 people who underwent imaging-only at three centres between 2004 and 2019.
Overall, the mean age was 50; 42% were women; and 73% were Caucasian. The median follow-up was 5.5 months. Relevant preoperative variables were mostly similar between groups.
