Implantation of an adjustable intragastric balloon for eight months leads to a 15% loss in body weight on average, US researchers report.

Their study in 288 patients at seven sites is the first randomised controlled trial of the balloon, which allows upward or downward adjustment, although non-adjustable balloons have existed for decades, they say.
