Albuminuria ‘reflects severity’ of systemic congestion in heart failure

Albuminuria in new-onset or worsening heart failure is closely associated with markers of systemic congestion irrespective of diabetes and hypertension status, Dutch cardiologists report.
Their results, based on data from 3700 adults with heart failure (HF), also point to a high prevalence of albuminuria in this setting as it was detected in almost half of the patients.
The University of Groningen-led team say the extent of albuminuria “is more [closely] related to the severity of congestion than to markers of intrinsic renal disease”.
Writing in the European Heart Journal, they used data from the index and validation cohorts of the 11-country European study BIOSTAT-CHF to determine the biomarker profile of albuminuria in chronic HF with both reduced and preserved ejection fraction.
