People taking enzyme-inducing antiseizure drugs are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, particularly with use for over a decade, a UK study shows.

The researchers examined electronic health records from English National Health Service hospitals collected between 1990 and 2019, reporting the results in JAMA Neurology.

The analysis included almost 11 million adults, including some 31,500 individuals who were diagnosed with epilepsy after 1990 and were free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline.

Overall, 11,800 of the people with epilepsy had at least four consecutive prescriptions for enzyme-inducing antiseizure drugs after an adult-onset epilepsy diagnosis.
