Botulinum toxin A appears to be a safe and effective treatment for palmar hyperhidrosis, a group of NSW dermatologists says.

After conducting a retrospective analysis of outcomes of the treatment among 30 patients, the group called for consideration of expanding Medicare funding, which is confined to treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

The doctors from Nepean Hospital, in Greater Western Sydney, examined data for all patients treated with botulinum toxin A for palmar hyperhidrosis at one clinic between 2015 and 2019.

The patients (50% male, median age 29 years) comprised the largest Australian study cohort on the topic, Dr Joshua Farrell and colleagues wrote in a brief communication in the Internal Medicine Journal.
