Offer salpingo-oophorectomy with C-section in BRCA mutation carriers: gynaecologists

A case series suggests the procedures could be combined to reduce morbidity.

Prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy should be offered at time of obstetric-indicated caesarean delivery in women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 pathogenic variants, say UK gynaecologists.

In their small case series, the doctors reported outcomes for four women aged 40-45 who underwent the combined procedure to determine safety and patient satisfaction.

Overall, there was no damage to internal organs, no blood transfusions or reoperation required, and an average 687mL of blood was lost, which was comparable to that seen in caesarean deliveries.

The team, from the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said the women reported a “high level of satisfaction” with the combined procedure.
