Burnout among oncology professionals is becoming more prevalent as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, global surveys suggest.

The online survey results, presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) virtual congress 2020, show growing rates of distress as doctors grapple with changes to their professional duties and patient care including longer hours, remote consults and career interruption.

The “surveys indicate that COVID-19 is having an impact on wellbeing, burnout and job performance”, said UK oncologist Dr Susana Banerjee, from the ESMO Resilience Task Force which initiated the research.
