Disease risk for light smokers might be underestimated

AusDoc brings you the latest news from the European Respiratory Society Congress 2020.
Those who smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes a day face a ‘disproportionate’ respiratory risk, researchers say.
Reporting to delegates at the European Respiratory Society’s 2020 (ERS 2020) virtual international congress, US researchers described results of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s pooled cohort study comprising nearly 19,000 people with a consistent smoking status.
Participants were classified as ‘light smokers’ if they smoked fewer than 10 cigarettes a day, ‘smokers’ if they smoked between 10-20 per day, or ‘heavy smokers’ if their use was more than 20 daily.
