Early rhythm control ‘effective across AF types’

Patients with first-diagnosed AF tend to have the longest hospital spell, investigators find

Benefits of early rhythm control are seen across three subtypes of newly diagnosed AF, German researchers report.

The findings come from a further analysis of data from the EAST-AFNET 4 trial, looking at results broken down by type of AF.

EAST-AFNET 4 (Early Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation for Stroke Prevention Trial) randomised patients with AF, diagnosed within the year prior, to either early rhythm treatment by ablation or medications—at the choice of the treating doctor—or to usual care.

In the new analysis, results were examined separately for the 1048 patients with first-diagnosed AF, 994 with paroxysmal AF and 743 with persistent AF.
