ED admissions for type 2 diabetic ketoacidosis rise during pandemic: study

Researchers have tracked changes in the pattern of UK hospital admissions for the complication across successive pandemic waves

Emergency admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) during the pandemic followed different trajectories for patients with type 1 and type 2 disease, UK researchers report.

While admissions for DKA in patients with existing type 2 diabetes rose – as did admissions with DKA in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes – admissions for the complication in people with type 1 diabetes fell, their data reveal.

The team used data for emergency admissions for DKA at hospitals in England during three phases of the pandemic: the first wave (from March to June 2020), a lull (July to October) and a second wave (November 2020 to February 2021).

They compared the rates of admission for DKA with data for the same periods over the years 2017-2020.
