Men treated for well-differentiated thyroid cancer are at 2-3 times higher risk of recurrence than women, a Canadian study shows.

The results suggest that sex is a risk factor for disease recurrence in its own right and guidelines may need to be adjusted to take this into account, the authors say.

Nearly 2600 adult post-thyroidectomy patients (80% female, mean age 48) from centres across Canada were included in the registry study and followed for a mean of 7.7 years.
