Genital infection with flozins ‘more likely in smokers’

Findings from a retrospective cohort study shed light on which patients might be susceptible to this adverse event, researchers say

Patients with type 2 diabetes who are on SGLT2 inhibitors may be twice as likely to develop genital infections if they are smokers, a study shows.

The Italian researchers believe their single-centre study is the first to highlight the association with tobacco and say larger studies are now needed to confirm the finding.

The team from the University of Florence examined medical records for 508 patients treated at a diabetes outpatient clinic during October and November 2020, all of whom had received a script for an SGLT2 inhibitor two years earlier.

They found that 18.3% of the patients who had been smokers in October 2018 had a genital infection recorded in their notes during the two-year follow-up.
