Hidradenitis suppurativa linked to IBD

Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa are at relatively high risk for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a recent meta-analysis.
Researchers from Taiwan searched the literature and identified five relevant case-control studies, two cross-sectional studies, and one cohort study covering a total of 93,600 participants, mostly from the US and Europe.
Pooling data from the case-control and cross-sectional studies showed patients with hidradentitis suppurativa (HS) had double the odds of Crohn’s disease and a 50% increased risk of ulcerative colitis.
And the cohort study reported a more than fivefold increased risk of IBD in patients with HS compared with controls.
