Can RANZCOG fix the gender problem in obstetrics and gynaecology?

Incoming college president Dr Gillian Gibson acknowledged the need to confront gender biases among clinicians and patients alike

It is ironic that Dr Gillian Gibson is only the second woman elected RANZCOG president, yet a key issue she will tackle is a lack of male doctors in the training program.

Men make up just 15% of applicants for the college’s specialist training program despite historically dominating the field.

Last year, a study published in the college’s journal revealed that strong perceptions of a gender bias were a major factor in preventing more male doctors from pursuing a career in the field.

The researchers, led by obstetrician and gynaecologist Professor Caroline de Costa, interviewed 37 medical students and 94 junior doctors in Queensland.
