IBD flares raise risk of acute arterial events: study

Researchers quantify the elevated risk of cardiovascular events for patients with, versus without, IBD and pinpoint predictors

The severity of inflammatory bowel disease influences the likelihood of acute arterial events, boosting risk more than fivefold compared with patients without a flare, a study shows.

In addition, US researchers show elevated high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) is predictive of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, underlining the importance of reducing inflammation.

The findings come from a large population-based study based on data from the UK Biobank.

The investigators identified 5000 participants with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and 20,000 controls to compare the risk of incident and premature acute arterial events during an average 12 years’ follow-up.
