IBD: Longer antibiotic script helps reduce C. difficile recurrence

A month's course of vancomycin is preferable, say authors

In patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a long course of oral vancomycin may reduce recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection, a retrospective study suggests.

US researchers examined medical records for 134 patients with IBD who had at least one positive C. difficile toxin assay by polymerase chain reaction between 2010 and 2016.

They compared outcomes for those put on long-duration vancomycin (21-42 days) with those put on the antibiotic short-term (10-14 days).
