Mechanical thrombectomy: How practice makes ‘perfect’

Experience counts in efficiently performing the procedure to optimise reperfusion, researchers say

Interventional neuroradiologists with more mechanical thrombectomies under their belt perform procedures more quickly and get better recanalisation rates, a French study shows.

But there appears to be a ceiling effect at about 80-120 procedures when performance improvement starts to plateau, the researchers say.

Although international guidelines recommend a minimum experience of endovascular therapy (EVT) before doctors perform the procedure autonomously, evidence is lacking on how much experience is needed, the investigators write in Stroke.

The team used retrospective data from seven high-volume stroke centres in France, five of which were members of the Endovascular Treatment in Ischaemic Stroke registry.
