Methotrexate ‘might benefit’ knee OA with inflammation

AusDoc brings you the latest news from the American College of Rheumatology virtual congress 2020.
Oral methotrexate significantly improves physical function in patients who have knee osteoarthritis with inflammation, a study shows.
In a trial of 249 patients with primary radiographic-confirmed knee osteoarthritis (OA) with joint swelling and six months or more of pain, rheumatologists in Kolkata, India, compared methotrexate 15-20mg a week with a placebo substitute, glucosamine 1500mg a day.
The men and women, aged between 40 and 65 years, were divided into inflammatory (172) versus non-inflammatory (77) groups based on erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein measurements, ACR Convergence, the American College of Rheumatology’s virtual congress was told.
