Use of menopausal hormone therapy is linked to an elevated risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, regardless of duration of use or the age at which women started treatment, a large study shows.

Danish clinicians report that women exposed to oestrogen-progestin therapy were 24% more likely to develop all-cause dementia compared to never users.

Their results also suggest a 21% and 22% higher risk of late onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, respectively, among those who had used menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).
